Mobile payments are highly secure and growing rapidly as consumers embrace the simplicity and convenience of mobile purchasing. Mobile security is designed around two core technologies:

  1. Card tokenization
  2. iOS/Android encryption

When customers use Apple Pay, Google Pay, Click to Pay (Visa/Mastercard), or PayPal on an iPhone or Android device, the credit/debit card number is never stored. Instead, it is swapped out for a secure token number, then “locked” with multiple layers of dynamic encryption. A final layer of security comes from biometric security on the device, including facial and fingerprint recognition (or a required PIN), which prevents fraudulent transactions if a device is lost or stolen.

Some digital wallets are components of the seller’s online/mobile channel. A good example is Amazon’s wallet, where users can store multiple payment cards and select which one to use with each purchase.

A second type of digital wallet is offered either by your credit card company or smartphone provider. Leading wallets include Apple Pay, Google Pay, as well as PayPal and Click to Pay offered by Visa, Mastercard, and banks. These wallets are increasingly popular due to their inherent security and acceptance at a growing list of online and in-store merchant locations.

Mobile apps are built following the software requirements developed by Apple for iOS (https://developer.apple.com/documentation/) and Google for the Android operating system (https://developer.android.com/). Once a mobile app is built, it goes through a validation process with Apple and Google, and is then made available to iPhone and Android users around the world through respective app stores.

Mobile web is an extension of your online commerce experience, but optimized for iOS and Android devices. When building a mobile web checkout experience, you control all features and the way a user interacts with the site on a mobile phone or tablet.

More companies are building both mobile apps and mobile web stores to give customers multiple ways to find their products and services and complete purchases anytime, anywhere.

Apple Pay and Google Pay are growing rapidly as consumers realize how easy it is to set up once on an iPhone or Android device, then make contactless purchases in stores, online, and on mobile devices. PayPal has a large, growing user community and continues to be a popular option for online and mobile transactions. Visa and Mastercard have rebranded their mobile wallet solutions under Click to Pay (formerly Visa Checkout and Masterpass). Both are easy to use and growing in volume across the industry beginning with major online retailers.
